At Martin Brothers Po-boys, we take pride in our rich heritage steeped in New Orleans culture. Our Original New Orleans Style Po-boys are crafted using traditional recipes and the freshest ingredients to deliver an authentic experience of New Orleans cuisine.
The HISTORY of the Original PO-BOY!
Po-boys were originally made by the Martin Brothers, Bennie and Clovis, who moved to New Orleans from Raceland in the mid-1910s. Both brothers worked as Streetcar Conductors until the early 1920s, when they opened Martin Brothers Coffee Stand and Restaurant in the French Market. Their inclusion of a restaurant attracted fellow streetcar workers and union members. However, when the carmen went on strike in 1929, Bennie and Clovis pledged to provide the Carmen with free meals until the strike was resolved. To fulfill this promise, the brothers created a unique sandwich that was initially called the “poor boy.” They collaborated with the bakery that supplied their French bread to design a loaf that had a consistent width from end to end. This crispy bread became the perfect vessel for a hearty sandwich to satisfy the hungry strikers.
When a striker came by to get a sandwich, they would call out, “here comes another poor boy,” as the striker approached. This is how this New Orleans classic came to be known as the “poor boy,” which was later shortened to “po-boy.” The legacy of the “po-boy” continues at restaurants across Louisiana, celebrating the essence of southern food.

How it all Began - The Start-up
How many of you duck hunters and fishermen out there have ever had a Po' Boy sandwich at Martin Brothers on St. Claude Street? Our favorite was French fries on French bread with mayo & gravy only, costing just 25 cents, washed down with a Barq’s Root Beer for another 5 cents.
Gravy & mayo dressed was 15 cents, and during hard times, this was our go-to sandwich.
Outside Martin Brothers, on the corner of St. Claude & Touro, stood the Manual's Hot Tamale wagon. I don’t remember how much they were a dozen, but Manual's Hot Tamales were the best in the world.
These days, Rocky & Carlos in Chalmette serves up a good fried potato sandwich—once again, gravy & mayo only! But in today’s world, it’ll set you back $10 plus. And Barq’s root beer is $2.50.
